What size generator do I need for my home?
Most Central Ohio homes between 1,800 and 3,500 square feet are well-served by a 20kW–26kW unit. The right size depends on what you want to keep running — HVAC, well pump, sump pump, EV charger, and kitchen loads all add up. Our free load calculation walks through your panel and tells you exactly which model fits.
How long does a standby generator last?
A well-installed standby generator with regular maintenance typically lasts 20–30 years. The engine itself often outlives multiple homeowners. The key is twice-a-year service: oil, filters, battery, and a transfer-switch test.
Natural gas or propane — which is better?
If your home already has natural gas service, that is the easier path: unlimited fuel, no tank to refill, lower per-hour cost. Propane is a great option for homes outside the gas grid — a 500-gallon tank can run a 22kW unit for roughly 5–7 days at typical load. We help you decide during the site visit.
Which Kohler generator should I choose?
Kohler is our go-to for Central Ohio homes, and it is the only residential line we install. We like its build quality, its strong standard warranty, and how quietly it runs. We will walk you through the right model for your home, your budget, and current availability during your free site visit.
How loud is a standby generator, and how fast does it kick on?
Modern Kohler residential units run at about 65–69 dB at 23 feet — roughly the volume of a normal conversation. We always position the unit to keep it well within local Licking County noise ordinances. On start-up speed: the automatic transfer switch senses an outage within seconds and your generator is up to full power in about 10 seconds, so the gap is barely noticeable.
Do you offer service and maintenance plans?
Yes. We offer annual maintenance plans that keep your generator under warranty and ready to run — oil and filter changes, battery and coolant checks, a transfer-switch test, and a full operational inspection, typically on a twice-a-year schedule. Because we are a Factory-Authorized Kohler dealer, we can also service and repair Kohler units even if another company installed them.
Do I need a permit to install a generator in Central Ohio?
Yes. Newark, Heath, Pataskala, Granville, and the rest of Licking County require an electrical permit and, for natural-gas units, a separate gas permit. We pull every permit and schedule the inspection — you do not have to.
How long does installation take?
Most residential standby installs take one to two days on-site once the unit is delivered. Lead time on units is typically two to four weeks during normal demand, longer during storm seasons.
Will my generator start automatically when the power goes out?
Yes. The automatic transfer switch detects an outage within seconds, signals the generator to start, and switches your home over once it is up to voltage. When utility power returns, it switches back and shuts the generator down.
Do you service generators you did not install?
Yes — we are a Factory-Authorized Kohler dealer, and we also service other major brands regardless of who installed them.
Is financing available?
Yes. We work with several lenders who specialize in home-improvement financing, including options with no payments for 12 months. Ask during your quote and we will send the details.
Can a standby generator power my whole house?
A properly sized whole-home generator (typically 22kW–26kW for an average Central Ohio home) powers everything in your panel without load shedding. For larger homes or homes with multiple HVAC zones, we may recommend a managed-load system that prioritizes essential circuits while still backing up the rest.
How much does a home standby generator cost installed?
For most Central Ohio homes, a complete installed system — generator, automatic transfer switch, concrete pad, electrical, gas hookup, permits, and startup — typically runs from the mid five figures depending on size and site conditions. The only way to get an accurate number is our free on-site load calculation and written quote, and we offer financing including options with no payments for 12 months.
Will my generator handle Central Ohio winters and snow?
Yes. Kohler home standby units are built to start and run reliably in freezing temperatures, ice storms, and heavy snow — exactly when you need them most. We position the unit on a raised pad with proper clearance so drifting snow does not block airflow, and a weekly self-test keeps the battery and engine ready through the coldest months.
Can a standby generator charge my EV during an outage?
It can, with the right sizing. A Level 2 EV charger draws roughly 7,200 watts on its own, so we factor it into your load calculation — often pairing it with load management so the generator prioritizes essential circuits and still tops off your vehicle. A whole-home unit in the 24kW–26kW range comfortably handles an average home plus EV charging.
Does a standby generator add value to my home?
A permanently installed standby generator is a desirable, move-in-ready feature for buyers across Licking County — it signals a well-maintained home and removes a worry during the storm-prone seasons. Beyond resale, it protects your home day to day from frozen pipes, a flooded basement, and food spoilage during outages.
